Nia Fitness Technique

This class is available on a drop-in basis. You may come anytime during the semester.

Nia is a fitness class that is appropriate for everyone. With free-flowing choreography, universal music and systemic movement, Nia uses grounded steps and stances from the martial arts, dance, and body integration therapies. Nia delivers cardiovascular benefits and provides balanced bodywork that is fun, energetic, expressive and creative.

The Nia Technique is a fitness and lifestyle practice that was developed by Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas in 1983 when they began experiencing pain and repetitive-use injuries as teachers of traditional, high-impact aerobics. They took off their shoes and incorporated moves and energies of the martial arts (T'ai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido), dance (Jazz, Modern Dance, the work of Isadora Duncan), and the healing arts (Yoga, the teachings of Moshé Feldenkraise, and the Alexander Technique). Nia is designed for every body. It is ageless and effective for every person, from athletes and dancers to children, special needs groups and the elderly.

Practiced barefoot to music, Nia invites each person to move at his or her own level of intensity, adapting the movements to their own body's potential at any given moment. With the philosophy Through Movement We Find Health, we seek to connect or reconnect to the innate intelligence of the body.

Class Requirements

Please wear clothes that you feel comfortable moving in and bring a water bottle. Nia is practiced in bare feet. Please feel free to bring a towel or yoga mat for the "floorplay" section of the class if you would like.
